The third edition of Indian inter-denominational Carol singing entitled Ecumenical Christmas Celebrations- took place at the Coptic Orthodox Cathedral in Newcastle.
Co-organised by St Gregorious Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church and Syro Malabar Catholic Community, Newcastle, the service featured Carols sung by a further three participating churches-Syro Malabar Catholic Community Sunderland, Mar Thoma Congregation, Newcastle and St Thomas Indian Orthodox Church, Blaydon.
The Carol service was presided over by Syro Malabar Chaplain Fr Saji Thottathil with the anchoring done by Diya Varghese of Syro Malabar Church Newcastle and the vote of thanks proposed by George Meleth of the Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church.
In his address, Fr Saji appealed to the ecumenical audience to remember the needy in the midst of their Christmas celebrations and to do some fundraising to help worthy causes in the North East while enjoying the music.
Every group performed to the tunes of two Christmas-centric Malayalam songs composed by different musicians and lyricists from Indian and the UK. The audience which was made up of members of various churches and community guests applauded the singers ‘efforts.
